Artist’s Statement

Sogetsu Ikebana and contemporary American style flower arranging share many similarities as a modern art form and I find participating in events offered by Ikebana International and the National Association of Garden Clubs to be very educational and creatively challenging.

As a studio potter and Sogetsu teacher, I strive to inspire others in their own creative endeavors through the use of unusual materials and containers.

The ceramic containers that I make are sculptural, often with multiple openings. Each piece is unique, and any side of the container can be the front, which offers the designer many options for selecting and arranging materials.

Surface textures and subtly layered glazes reflect the hand building process of turning wet clay into high fired durable vessels that maximize the options for each artist’s self expression. All are well suited for both Ikebana and contemporary American style flower arranging.

My own creative energy is fueled by seeing how others make use of my designs and I look forward to hearing your suggestions for new ideas and commission requests.
